OSUN STATE RECEIVES GLOBAL RECOGNITION FROM IEEE SMART CITIES AWARDS 2026 FOR IMOLE SOLAR LAMP

OSOGBO — 06/10/2026 — Osunstate.gov.ng

Osun State has received global recognition from the IEEE Smart Cities Awards 2026, with the State’s Imole Solar Lamp initiative receiving a Special Mention among innovative smart-city solutions from cities and governments across the world.

The recognition was announced by the IEEE Smart Cities programme following the decision of an international jury, with the formal presentation of certificates scheduled to take place during the IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2 2026) in Porto, Portugal, from October 26–30, 2026.

Osun State was recognised alongside innovative projects from countries including Saudi Arabia, the United States, Morocco, Indonesia, Brazil, India, China/Hong Kong, Cyprus, Iran, Taiwan and others.

The Imole Solar Lamp is a renewable-energy intervention developed as part of Osun State’s broader climate action and clean-energy agenda, designed to improve access to reliable, clean and affordable lighting while responding to the everyday energy needs of communities.

The recognition places Osun State among a select group of cities and regions acknowledged by IEEE Smart Cities for innovative approaches to urban development, resilience, technology, sustainability and improved quality of life.

Reacting to the recognition, the Director-General and Special Envoy of the Governor of Osun State on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, Prof. Chinwe Obuaku-Igwe, described the award as an important validation of Osun State’s emerging model of people-centred climate action.

“This recognition is deeply significant to us because Imole Solar Lamp was conceived not simply as a technology project, but as a practical response to the realities of our people.

“For us, smart cities are not only about sophisticated technology or digital infrastructure. A city is smart when innovation improves the everyday lives of its people, expands access to opportunity and builds resilience.

“We are therefore particularly proud that Osun’s approach to clean energy and people-centred climate action has been recognised on a global platform by IEEE Smart Cities.”

Prof. Obuaku-Igwe further noted that the recognition reinforces the State’s commitment to using climate action, renewable energy, circular economy principles and innovation as instruments for inclusive development.

She added that the recognition belongs to the people of Osun State and reflects the commitment of the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke to developing practical solutions that connect environmental sustainability with social and economic development.

The IEEE Smart Cities Awards recognise innovative city projects and initiatives demonstrating significant contributions to the development of smarter, more sustainable and resilient communities.

Osun State’s Special Mention is particularly notable given the diversity and global profile of the 2026 finalists and recognised projects. Other Special Mention recipients included initiatives from Berkane, Morocco; Coral Gables, USA; Nicosia, Cyprus; Tehran, Iran; Taoyuan City, Taiwan; São José dos Campos, Brazil; and Jakarta, Indonesia, among others.

The State will receive an official certificate from IEEE Smart Cities, with the formal ceremony expected to take place during ISC2 2026 in Porto, Portugal.

The Osun State Government views the recognition as an encouragement to deepen its climate and renewable-energy interventions and to continue building a model of smart, sustainable and inclusive development rooted in the realities of its people.
